Practical Signal Processing
HOME
short course
The Course: The aim of this two day intensive training course is to provide a basic understanding of the techniques of signal processing with particular emphasis on the practical aspects of the subject. Delegates will benefit from a careful balance of teaching and practical work. Demonstration sessions will be held each day to illustrate techniques and avoidable pitfalls in analysis procedures.

The course allows ample opportunity for delegates to ask questions and exchange ideas with the lecturer and fellow delegates. Comprehensive notes covering all the lectures will be provided and these serve as a valuable reference after the course.

Independence: This course is not sponsored by, or dependent upon, any product manufacturer. Delegates will not be subjected to "sales lectures". This independence enables a free and open discussion of the key features and relative merits of spectrum analysers in an unbiased and objective way.

Participants: The course will be of value to those wishing to acquire a basic practical understanding of the techniques of signal processing. No prior knowledge of the subject is required.

Outline Syllabus:
  • Signal classification, Periodic, transient and random data, Random and bias errors, signal processing procedures.
  • Digital data acquisition, Quantisation, ADC capabilities, Triggering methods, Sampling and aliasing, record length requirements.
  • Data Pre-processing, Calibration, data validation, Editing, Linear trend and Wild point removal, Integration and differentiation, Digital filtering.
  • Amplitude statistics, Probability density function, Level crossing, Peak value and rainflow statistics.
  • Fourier series, Integral transform, DFT and FFT, psd, Calculations pitfalls, Application of spectral mapping, synchronouos time averaging, order tracking and order ratio averaging.
  • Auto and cross correlation, Measurement of time delays and transmission paths, Recovering signals in noise, Relationship between cross correlation and cross spectrum.
  • Leakage and windowing, Ensemble averaging, smoothing, Frequency resolution, The Zoom Transform, Sources of error in practical spectral analysis.
  • Frequency Response Function, Influence of measurement noise, H1, H2 and Hv, Dynamic testing techniques, Bode and Nyquist diagrams, MIMO systems.
  • Coherence function, Measure of confidence in FRF, Coherent and incoherent output power spectrum, Noise cancellation, Conditioned spectra, Partial coherence, Source ranking.
Practical demonstration sessions will be held each day to reinforce concepts introduced in the lectures. The workshops will utilise signal processing analysers to provide an illustration of basic techniques, applications and avoidable pitfalls in analysis procedures.
